About the Firm
Independent consulting arborists. Family-owned since 1985.
Coppinger Company Inc. is a family-owned arboricultural consulting practice based in Massachusetts, serving homeowners, contractors, attorneys, and property managers across Greater Boston Metro West. We assess trees, write reports, and navigate permits - but we don't perform tree work, so our recommendations have no conflict of interest built in.
John E. Coppinger IV leads the consulting practice, with work centered on municipal compliance, risk documentation, and retained oversight for properties with serious canopy.
Who we are
Coppinger Company Inc. was established in 1985. John Coppinger, ISA Certified Arborist and TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification) holder, leads the consulting practice. The firm's focus is arboricultural consulting - risk assessment, municipal permit navigation, tree protection planning, and retained monitoring for properties with significant mature canopy.
What independence means here
We don't remove trees. We don't sell pruning, spraying, or any physical tree care. When we recommend that a tree be cabled, removed, or left alone, that recommendation is based on the arboricultural assessment - not on whether we'd profit from the work. This is the core of a consulting arborist practice, and it's the reason attorneys, insurers, and municipal reviewers treat our reports differently than assessments written by companies that also bid the work.
Where we work
Greater Boston Metro West - Cambridge, Brookline, Newton, Wellesley, Weston, Concord, Lexington, Winchester, Dover & surrounding areas. Most of our municipal compliance work is concentrated in towns with active tree ordinances, but risk assessments and consulting engagements extend across the region.
Credentials
John Coppinger holds ISA Certified Arborist credential NE-6630A, ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ), and has completed the ASCA Consulting Academy. Board Certified Master Arborist (BCMA) and Registered Consulting Arborist (RCA) designations are in progress.
